Join us for our special Lord Burghley Education Programme, with workshops, drama, crafts and more.

As part of our celebrations of the birth of Lord Burghley 500 years ago we will be running an education programme that builds on our popular Tudor tours, with costumed guides, workshop, lectures, drama and crafts.

Education Programme Schedule

In celebration of Lord Burghley’s 500th Anniversary in 2020, Burghley would like children to create their own piece of historical writing using no more than 500 words.

There are two age categories, 6 – 8 years and 9 – 11 years. No matter what their ability or background, we would love to see as many children getting involved and we’re most of all, looking forward to reading their individual pieces.

Tell us about your favourite historical character, setting or location. This is the golden opportunity to show off your historical knowledge. Get as creative as you like to be in with a chance to win these amazing prizes:

  • All entries will receive a certificate celebrating their involvement.
  • The top ten entries from each age category will win a free family day ticket to the House and Gardens.
  • The final two in each age category, will win a special guided tour of the House for a family.
  • The winner of each age category will win a Burghley Children’s Gift Hamper with Burghley branded gifts, a Friends of Burghley Family ticket, a special family Guided Tour and Afternoon Tea for the whole family in the Orangery.

Each submission will be judged by our dedicated education team. Please send your entries to ‘’

Final submissions will be on the 8th of May.

The Rubbish Shakespeare Company presents ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’

Runaways. Fairies. Goblins. WATER PISTOLS!?! Look out, it’s Rubbish Shakespeare!

A spectacular outdoor performance on the 10th June, The Rubbish Shakespeare Company cast of four have the Bard’s impish tale of forbidden love and pixies in their sights.

Their plan, to stage the greatest edition of the Dream ever seen complete with magic in it and everything. Will they succeed? Of course not – they’re ‘Rubbish!’ Sit  back, relax and giggle along, as our four hapless idiots fail for an hour for your amusement.

Full of high-octane slapstick action and mischievous storytelling, this vibrant reimagining brings belly laughs for all ages.

Expect a trail of wigs, bubble guns, life-size cardboard cutouts, and a frankly pitiful attempt at roller skating.

Your kids will love it, and you will too.
