Session overview

Through games, role-play and practical activities, pupils discover how plants change through the seasons, why pollinators matter and how different plants thrive in different environments.

They’ll become trees and busy bees, meet Cyril the Squirrel and head into the gardens to investigate real plants and trees. With bark rubbing, observation and plenty of opportunities to join in, this memorable workshop helps bring the KS1 science curriculum vividly to life.

What pupils do

  • Learn about the structure of a tree and the meaning of the terms 'deciduous' and 'evergreen', before creating a bark rubbing.
  • Take part in an interactive activity exploring how an apple tree changes through the four seasons.
  • Become bees or trees during an interactive activity focused on pollination.
  • Visit different areas of the garden to identify the plants growing in each environment.

What to expect

  • Takes place in an outdoor classroom-style learning space and around the gardens.
  • A mixture of seated and active activities.
  • An educator-led format with interactive activities.
  • Delivered in groups of up to 30 pupils.
  • The session lasts approximately 60 minutes.
  • The session is delivered at an appropriate level for Key Stage 1 pupils.
  • The session can be adapted to suit pupils' knowledge and engagement.

Accessibility

  • This is a fairly active session.
  • The session takes place underneath a stretch tent and around the gardens, with a fair amount of walking involved.
  • Toilets are located a short walk from the activity area.
  • Alternative outdoor space is available should a pupil need time away from the activity with an accompanying adult.
  • Accessible routes are available through much of the garden, although paths and surfaces vary. If you'd like to  discuss specific access needs, just let us know.
