After Hours Architecture & Landscape Tour

An expert-led tour exploring the vision, design and ambition behind Burghley

Enjoy an exclusive after hours experience at Burghley on this carefully curated guided tour, offering a rare opportunity for close-up views of key features and insight into the people ideas and landscapes that have shaped the House and grounds over five centuries.

William Cecil's Creation and the 5th Earl's Golden Gates

The evening begins with an architectural tour led by Curator, Jon Culverhouse, whose deep knowledge of the House and its history brings William Cecil’s design to life. Entering through the North Court, take in the grand entrance, before moving on to the West Front of the House to view the celebrated Golden Gates. Designed in the 17th century by Jean Tijou, this is a wonderful opportunity to appreciate their detail and craftsmanship up close. Along the way, uncover intriguing details, fascinating stories and learn about lesser-known changes made to the House over time.

Capability's Alteration

The focus then shifts to the landscape as the tour continues into the South Gardens guided by Head Gardener, Joe Whitehead. Here, explore Capability Brown’s transformative influence on the grounds, taking in views of the Lion Bridge, the lake and the carefully composed vistas created by his vision. Pause near Brown’s Summer House to enjoy refreshments beneath the sweeping canopy of a majestic Cedar of Lebanon, one of his signature statement trees, with serene views across the water.

Glorious Gardens

The guided walk continues through the gardens, highlighting seasonal interest, planting schemes and the care required to maintain Burghley’s historic landscape today. This is an opportunity to see the gardens through expert eyes and explore areas not normally open to visitors.

Cocktails and Canapés

The evening concludes with cocktails and canapés served in the Orangery Rose Garden, an elegant setting in which to reflect on a rich and immersive journey through Burghley’s past and present.
