Audience with Queen Elizabeth KS2
What challenges did Queen Elizabeth I face, and how did her decisions shape both her reign and the power of the monarchy? In this educator-in-role session, pupils become trainee courtiers as they enjoy an audience with the Queen herself.

Session overview
Through storytelling, historical scenarios and questioning, pupils explore Queen Elizabeth’s childhood, her relationship with William Cecil, the Spanish Armada and the choices she made as monarch. The session encourages pupils to question Elizabeth directly, consider the consequences of her decisions and develop a deeper understanding of one of England’s most significant rulers.
What pupils do
- Meet Queen Elizabeth I and learn about her difficult childhood, her relationship with William Cecil, the Golden Age, the Spanish Armada and why she never married.
- Respond to historical scenarios and questions.
- Use questioning skills to find out more about Elizabeth, her life and her reign.
What to expect
- Takes place in a classroom-style learning space.
- Delivered in groups of up to 30 pupils.
- The session lasts approximately 45 minutes.
- Led by a costumed educator portraying Queen Elizabeth I.
- A mainly seated, discussion-based session with opportunities for pupils to ask questions throughout.
- Costume and music help create an immersive atmosphere.
- The session can be adapted to suit pupils' knowledge, confidence and engagement.
- The session is delivered at an age-appropriate level for Key Stage 2 pupils.
