Session overview

Get hands-on with clay and see what happens when patterns, textures and ideas are transformed into sculpture. Pupils create two clay tiles, experimenting with different tools and mark-making techniques to produce one abstract design and another inspired by the natural world.

Once they have chosen their favourite, the real transformation begins. The clay design is used to create a plaster cast, giving each pupil their own finished sculpture to take back to school, ready to paint or decorate another day.

The workshop is adapted to suit KS1 or KS2, allowing pupils to develop their creative ideas and practical skills at an appropriate level.

What pupils do

  • Learn what sculpture is and explore some of the different materials it can be made from.
  • Roll and shape clay to form two decorative tiles.
  • Experiment with a variety of mark-making tools.
  • Watch their design be cast in plaster by a member of the Education Team.
  • Take home a finished clay tile.
