Interpreting Elizabethan Portraits KS4

In this educator-led classroom session, pupils explore the conventions of Elizabethan portraiture and learn how symbolism, clothing, objects and composition were used to communicate carefully constructed messages.

After developing techniques for reading visual sources, pupils apply their skills to two portraits of Queen Elizabeth I. They compare how the Queen’s image was presented at different points in her reign, support their interpretations with visual evidence and consider how portraiture contributed to the creation of royal authority and reputation.
