Garden of Surprises - Self-guided

Inspired by Elizabethan ideas and historic records, the Garden of Surprises is a sequence of enclosed spaces animated by water, bold planting and playful features. With its mist grotto, mirror maze and unexpected discoveries, the garden offers a modern interpretation of an Elizabethan trick garden.

Teachers can use the space to encourage sensory exploration, observation, storytelling and discussion. Pupils can investigate plants, water and seasonal change, enjoy moments of imaginative discovery or use the garden as a setting for quiet reflection and wellbeing. Activities and learning objectives are chosen by the visiting teacher, giving every group the freedom to make the experience their own.

What pupils do

Activities are chosen and planned by the teacher but could include:

• Explore the garden and its different features.
• Observe plants, water and wildlife.
• Take part in storytelling and imaginative activities.
• Discuss seasonal change and the natural environment.
• Use the space for quiet observation and reflection.
• Complete teacher-led science, literacy or wellbeing activities.

• Pupils can explore the Garden of Surprises at a pace appropriate to the group.
• The open outdoor environment provides opportunities for movement, sensory engagement and quiet reflection.
• School staff accompany pupils throughout the visit and provide any additional support required.
