Meet William Cecil KS3

As they consider the intelligence, diplomacy and strategic alliances behind William Cecil's rise to the centre of Tudor government, pupils are also encouraged to examine the difficult decisions, moral dilemmas and personal qualities that made him both an effective statesman and a complex historical figure. The session establishes the political and religious context for the rest of the day’s historical investigations at Burghley House.

• Meet William Cecil through an educator-in-role presentation.
• Explore key events from his life and political career.
• Discover the relationship between William Cecil and Queen Elizabeth I.
• Investigate the challenges facing Elizabethan government.
• Ask questions and take part in discussion.
• Develop historical understanding through immersive interpretation.

What to expect

• Delivered in a classroom setting.
• Delivered in groups of up to 60 pupils.
• The session lasts approximately 40 minutes.
• Pupils remain seated throughout.
• Whole-group discussion, with participation encouraged.
• The pace and questioning can be adjusted to meet the needs of the group.
• The session is delivered at an age-appropriate level for Key Stage 3 pupils.

• Easy access to outdoor space is available should a pupil need time away from the activity with an appropriate adult.
