Who was William Cecil, and how did he become one of the most powerful and influential figures of the Elizabethan age? Through this educator-in-role session pupils explore Cecil’s early life, political career and close working relationship with Queen Elizabeth I.

Session overview

As they consider the intelligence, diplomacy and strategic alliances behind William Cecil's rise to the centre of Tudor government, pupils are also encouraged to examine the difficult decisions, moral dilemmas and personal qualities that made him both an effective statesman and a complex historical figure. The session establishes the political and religious context for the rest of the day’s historical investigations at Burghley House.
