Sculpture Garden Exploration KS1

Surrounded by nature and contemporary sculpture, Burghley’s Sculpture Garden provides a flexible outdoor setting for teacher-led learning and first-hand discovery. Pupils can explore the relationship between artworks and the landscape, look closely at the garden’s plants and trees, notice seasonal change and habitats, and respond to what they encounter through discussion, storytelling, creativity or play.

Teachers are free to use the garden in the way that best supports their class. It could provide inspiration for art, literacy and scientific enquiry, offer opportunities to investigate plant life and the natural world, or simply encourage pupils to look closely, ask questions and share their ideas within a unique and stimulating environment.

What pupils do

Activities are chosen and planned by the teacher but could include:

• Observation of contemporary sculptures within the landscape.
• Taking part in storytelling and imaginative activities.
• Exploring the plant life and the natural environment through observation and discussion.
• Completing teacher-led science, literacy or art activities.
• Sketching, photographing or recording observations where appropriate.
• Development of ideas through play, enquiry and first-hand experience.
• Enjoying opportunities for quiet reflection and wellbeing outdoors.
• Taking part in play-based learning.

• School staff accompany pupils throughout the visit and provide any additional support required.
