In the Royal Court: Tudor Dancing and Games KS2

Courtiers in Elizabethan England were expected to master many different skills, from dancing gracefully to taking part in entertainment.

In this fun and engaging session, pupils discover why these skills mattered and how people entertained themselves before television and the internet. Listening to music from the period, they learn the Pavane and consider the role dancing played in life in the court. Pupils also take part in Tudor-style games, working collaboratively as they experience some of the pastimes enjoyed during Queen Elizabeth’s reign. Just remember: at the Royal Court, it may be wise to let the Queen win!

What pupils do

• Learn to dance the ‘The Pavane’.
• Listen to Tudor music.
• Identify and order the Tudor monarchs.
• Take part in whole-class and small-group Tudor games, such as 'Lord Bean'. 

What to expect

• Takes place in a classroom-style learning space.
• Delivered in groups of up to 30 pupils.
• The session lasts approximately 30 minutes.
• Led by a costumed educator.
• The session is delivered at an age-appropriate level for Key Stage 2 pupils.

• The activity can be lively at times and may generate increased noise levels.

• The session takes place in a level-access learning space.

• Toilets are located nearby.

• There is easy access to outdoor space should a pupil need time away from the activity with an accompanying adult.
