Victorian Artefact Detectives KS2

What can everyday objects tell us about the people who used them? In this hands-on session, pupils explore a selection of Victorian artefacts linked to the people who lived and worked at Burghley House.

Working in small groups, pupils closely observe each object and discuss what it might have been used for before sharing their ideas with the wider group. Artefacts may include items such as a servant’s hat, an iron, a safety candle or butter pats. Through discussion and questioning, pupils discover how these objects can help us build a picture of everyday life in Victorian England.

What to expect

• Takes place in a classroom-style learning space.
• Delivered in groups of up to 30 pupils.
• The session lasts approximately 30 minutes.
• Led by a costumed educator.
• Combination of whole-class and small-group discussion.
• The session is delivered at an age-appropriate level for Key Stage 2 pupils.
• The session can be adapted to suit pupils' knowledge, confidence and engagement.

• The session takes place in a level-access learning space.
• The activity can be lively at times, with pupils moving between different servant tasks and role-play activities.
• Some activities use real and replica Victorian objects, providing opportunities for tactile and experiential learning.
• Toilets are located nearby.
• There is easy access to outdoor space should a pupil need time away from the activity with an accompanying adult.
• The educator can adapt information and delivery to support the needs of the group.
