About this package
What was life like during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, and why is Burghley House such an important part of her story? In this engaging full-day learning experience, pupils become Elizabethan courtiers as they meet the Queen, explore the house built by her trusted adviser William Cecil and uncover the people and events that shaped her reign.
Through storytelling, questioning, role-play and close observation, pupils discover what life was like in the court of Queen Elizabeth and beyond. From exploring Burghley’s State Rooms and Tudor Kitchen to experiencing Elizabethan food, music, games and dance, the day encourages pupils to consider how wealth, status and power influenced everyday life.
Supporting learning about the changing power of monarchs, local history and aspects of Tudor society, this memorable experience gives pupils the opportunity to explore Elizabethan England within the authentic surroundings of one of its greatest surviving houses.
How the day works
This package includes four learning sessions, combining different activities, settings and teaching styles across the day. You can explore the individual session pages below to find out more about what each one covers.
We can welcome up to 120 pupils on each visit. To keep sessions engaging and manageable, your school group will be divided into smaller rotation groups of up to 30 pupils. The day will be timetabled so that each group takes part in every learning session during the day.
