Important Travel Information - Stamford Town Bridge Closure
Stamford Town Bridge closure | 14 July to 1 September 2025
We’ve been informed of essential repair works taking place on Stamford Town Bridge (A1175) this summer. These works will require a full road and pedestrian closure of the bridge for up to 7 weeks, starting Monday 14 July 2025.
What's happening?
Lincolnshire Highways are carrying out urgent waterproofing repairs to the Grade II listed structure, which will be completely closed to both vehicles and pedestrians at all times (day and night) during the works. This includes weekends.
Will my journey to Burghley be affected?
The main access routes to Burghley House by car remain unaffected. When travelling to Burghley House please follow the brown tourist signs from the A1 (from both the north and south) which direct you towards the Main Visitor Entrance on the B1433 Barnack Road. Access from the east via the B1443 is also open as normal.
We advise visitors not to drive into Stamford town centre to reach Burghley during this period, as access via this route will be closed. Instead, a signed diversion route will guide you onto the A1 and back towards Burghley.
Visitors arriving on foot from Stamford town centre can follow one of two alternative pedestrian routes, detailed below.
Diversion information
If you are visiting from Stamford, please refer to the diversion routes below to plan your journey during the roadworks.
For vehicles:
Two signed diversion routes will be in place using the A1 and surrounding roads. These will be clearly signposted and designed to keep traffic moving smoothly. You can follow:
Route A – via A1175 (High Street St. Martins, Kettering Road), A1, A6121 (Tinwell Road, West Street, East Street), and A1175 (Brazenose Lane, St Leonard's Street, Wharf Road) and vice versa
Route B – via A1175 (High Street St. Martins, Kettering Road), A1, A6121 (Tinwell Road, West Street), and B1081 (Scotgate, All Saints Street, St Marys Street) and vice versa

For pedestrians:
Two alternative walking routes will be available to safely cross Stamford during the closure, using George Bridge and Albert Bridge. Signage will direct pedestrians through:
Route 1 – via St. Mary's Hill, Castle Street, Castle Dyke, Town Meadows and George Bridge
Route 2 – via Wharf Road, Albert Road and Albert Bridge

Plan ahead for a smooth journey
We recommend checking your route before you travel and allowing extra time if you are driving into Stamford town.
