Essential Summer Maintenance Works
We know that a big part of what makes a visit to Burghley special is the opportunity to explore a building steeped in history. Behind the scenes, we work year-round to care for and preserve the House. With a building of this scale and age, regular conservation and maintenance is essential.
This summer, a programme of important works is taking place as part of that ongoing effort - helping to keep Burghley in the best possible condition, today and for generations to come.
Heating System Upgrade
In July we will begin scheduled work to replace the ageing boilers and heating system of Burghley House. Parts of the heating system are over 50 years old and are becoming increasingly difficult to maintain and operate. The boilers have come to the end of their service, having worked hard to heat Burghley House and the Orangery Restaurant over the past decades.
This important upgrade will ensure the House remains warm, dry and protected throughout the colder months and is scheduled for completion ahead of winter.
As part of our planning, we have carefully explored a wide range of heating systems, balancing environmental considerations with the practicalities of a building of this scale and the complexity of its historic infrastructure. The new system has been selected to meet the specific needs of Burghley House, and the unique constraints of a Grade I listed building.

Roof Remedial Works
At the same time, our Master Stone Mason and the Estate Maintenance team will be carrying out repairs to two of the decorative stone obelisks located on the roof of the House.
This will involve the temporary erection of some scaffolding within the Chestnut Courtyard. While the scaffolding may alter certain views for a short time, there will be no impact to visitors enjoying a day out at Burghley.

Visiting During the Works
We’ve carefully planned this work to minimise any disruption. All visitor routes and key spaces remain fully open.
We’ll be providing updates to both these projects over the coming months.
We appreciate your understanding as we carry out this essential work to preserve and maintain Burghley.
